Preserving and Enhancing the Architectural Character of Spitalfields

This policy guides the Spitalfields Society’s approach to planning, conservation, and development proposals within the area. It sets out our commitment to preserving and enhancing the distinctive architectural character and historic built environment that make Spitalfields unique.

The Spitalfields Society is dedicated to safeguarding the area’s exceptional architectural heritage — defined by its fine Georgian and Victorian buildings, narrow streets, and rich social and cultural history.

We place particular importance on the protection of the Brick Lane and Fournier Street Conservation Area, Wentworth Street and the Elder Street Conservation Area, which together contain some of the most significant and best-preserved examples of 18th- and 19th-century urban architecture in London.

The Society supports sensitive restoration, repair, and adaptation that respect original materials, craftsmanship, and proportions. We oppose unsympathetic alterations, loss of historic fabric, and developments that undermine the scale, character, or setting of historic buildings and streets.

We work collaboratively with residents, developers, and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to ensure that all change within Spitalfields enhances — rather than diminishes — its architectural and cultural heritage. We also advocate the use of Article 4 Directions and robust planning controls to protect unlisted heritage buildings and the wider streetscape.

Through continuous dialogue, advocacy, and education, the Spitalfields Society seeks to ensure that Spitalfields’ historic environment remains a living part of London — a place where its remarkable architectural past enriches a sustainable and vibrant future.
