Liverpool Street Redevelopment

The Liverpool Street Station redevelopment is a major infrastructure and urban design initiative aimed at modernising and expanding Britain’s busiest rail hub to accommodate future growth in passenger numbers and improve accessibility.

Network Rail has submitted transformed plans to revamp the station’s concourse, increase step-free access with additional lifts and escalators, improve passenger facilities, and significantly expand retail and service spaces — all while retaining and celebrating key Victorian architectural features. Contemporary proposals include the addition of new platform access points, expanded circulation spaces and associated office development above the station to help fund improvements.

The scheme, which has attracted both strong public support for accessibility upgrades and substantial heritage-related objections, received approval in early 2026 amid vocal debate over the balance between modern needs and the preservation of the station’s historic character. The Society has objected to both applications made and supported the alternative proposals made by SAVE Britain’s heritage.
