Planning applications to convert 5 locations in the Old Truman Brewery to restaurant use, some with external seating – Planning Committee meeting on Wednesday 8th February

Planning applications to convert 5 locations in the Old Truman Brewery to restaurant use, some with external seating

The Planning Committee will consider these applications next Wednesday, 8th February, at 7.00pm in the Council Chamber of the Town Hall, Mulberry Place, Clove Crescent, E14 2BG.  The attachment gives details of all five.

Old Truman Brewery restaurant applications

Both the Spitalfields Society and many local residents have objected to these applications, and a petition has been raised against them.

Each restaurant claims to be small but collectively they represent 10,333 square feet of new restaurant space, enough for about 500 covers for good quality west end restaurants but more like 700-800 if one packs them in like the other Truman Brewery and Brick Lane restaurants. We think this probably represents the biggest restaurant application ever submitted in Tower Hamlets.

The Society has tried to use these restaurant applications to encourage some sort of constructive dialogue with the brewery but they have dismissed our efforts high handedly.

Rupert Wheeler will be attending the meeting to speak on behalf of the Society.

All the applications are recommended for refusal but members are still requested to attend the meeting in force – the presence of large numbers of objectors carries great weight with Council committees.

212 Brick Lane

Dear members,

APPLICATION TO VARY A PREMISES LICENCE AT 212 BRICK LANE, LONDON E1 6SA (BRICK LOUNGE)

I have just lodged an objection on behalf of the Society as a whole to the above application, which is for an extension of the bar’s  opening hours to 3.00 am on Fridays and Saturdays, extendable to 3.30 am on both days.  As weight of numbers always seems to count in these matters, the more objections LBTH receives the more attention they are likely to take so it would be a good idea if as many individual residents as possible also submit representations.

Below is a specimen letter, with the required email addresses, that you might wish to use as a template for opposing.

Best wishes,
Sandy Critchley

Dear Sirs

APPLICATION TO VARY A PREMISES LICENCE AT 212 BRICK LANE, LONDON E1 6SA (BRICK LOUNGE)

I am writing to register my objection to the above application to vary the Premises Licence at 212 Brick Lane (Brick Lounge).

The opening hours requested – extending the time of operation until 3.00 am on Fridays and Saturdays, extendable on both days until 3.30 am, are excessive, are out of line with the hours operating in other licensed establishments in the Brick Lane area and would contribute significantly to antisocial behaviour in the neighbourhood.

I therefore ask the licensing committee of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to reject this application.

Yours sincerely

FW: Police and Licensing Meeting … 7 PM on Wednesday, 1 February 2012

From John Critchley:

My apologies, I over-condensed an invitation from Spitalfields Community Group to attend their meeting with the Borough Police Commander.  I have been asked by them to say that it is very important that anyone wishing to attend that meeting or, indeed their meeting with our local MP, should let them know (see below)

[The SCG is anxious] “to invite any Spitalfields Society members who were interested to join us this coming Wednesday. This meeting is a public meeting, and I attach an electronic copy of the “Flyer” which was inserted into the current copies of “East End Life” that have been delivered in Spitalfields and Banglatown. The flyer provides more details of the 1st February meeting, and also provides details of a meeting with our MP on 1st March to which any members of the Spitalfields Society would also be most welcome.

120117 SCG Flyer for Feb & Mar 2012

Please would you pass on this invitation to your members. The one point we do need to emphasise is for anyone planning to attend either, or both, meeting(s) to let us know by email to:

spitalfieldscommunitygroup@gmail.com

just so that we know the numbers attending and can ensure that there are seats and space for everyone.

With all best wishes,

Reminder: 80 Commercial Street – application for an off-licence

A meeting of the LBTH Licensing Sub-Committee is due to make a decision on the application for an off-licence at 80 Commercial Street. This will be held at 6.30pm on Thursday 9th February at the Town Hall in Mulberry Place, E14. The council received 75 objections from local residents to this application and a petition signed by 69 objectors. However, to get the application rejected it will almost certainly be necessary to have a large turn-out from local residents at the Licensing Sub-Committee meeting.

Those wishing to attend should email Simmi Yesmin – simmi.yesmin@towerhamlets.gov.uk – to confirm their attendance. If anybody is thinking of speaking at the meeting to voice their objection that would be very useful. A group of residents from the west end of Fournier Street will definitely be attending and speaking. It may be worth talking to us beforehand to coordinate our message and to avoid repetition – the amount of time given to objectors to make their points is often strictly limited.

Please contact Matt Piper to discuss this or for further information

Meeting with Borough Police Commander and LBTH Service Head for Community Safer Service

There will be a meeting with the Borough Police Commander, DCS Paul Rickett, and Andy Bamber, LBTH Service Head for Community Safer Service, at the Attlee Hall on Wednesday 1st February, from 7-9pm.

The Attlee Youth Centre is on Thrawl Street, E1, just off Commercial Street, next one on the left past Fashion Street.

Public Life License Revoked

An extraordinary meeting of the Licensing Sub-Committee of Tower Hamlets Council decided after a 4-hour session this afternoon to revoke the licence of Public Life.

The decision came after strong representations from the Police, Council Officers and local residents, of whom about 30 were present.

However Public Life are likely to appeal.

Public Life License Review Hearing – Monday 16 January 2pm

Reminder: the Public Life licence review hearing is tomorrow at 2pm

Message from Matt Piper – forwarded by the Spitalfields Society

Subject: Public Life licence review

As you may have heard there have been developments concerning Public Life recently. There was a large police raid a week before Christmas during which a significant quantity of drugs were found and several people arrested including, I believe, some members of staff. The police then applied for, and obtained, an immediate suspension of their licence pending a full review. This review has been combined with the one that several local residents recently called and in support of which many local people signed a petition.

The review is due to take place at 2pm on Monday 16th January at LBTH offices at Mulberry Place, E14. The more people that attend, the better will be the chances of getting their licence permanently revoked. There will certainly be a group of residents attending from our end of Fournier Street but it would really help if other local people could attend too.  There will probably be some space in cars if people need transport and if not, there will be a group travelling on public transport which anyone is welcome to join. If people want more details on this, or the review, they are very welcome to contact me.

Many thanks for your help.

Matt

License Application – 76 Commercial Street

Dear Members, For information.

“Sent: 22 December 2011 10:49
To: ‘nick.kemp@towerhamlets.gov.uk’; ‘licensing@towerhamlets.gov.uk’; ‘Alan.D.Cruickshank@met.police.uk’

Subject: Licence Application for 76 Commercial Street

Dear Sirs,

Application for a premises Licence for 76 Commercial Street, London E1, formerly Dino’s Restaurant

At a special meeting of the Committee of the Spitalfields Society last night in relation to the above application it was decided to write a message of support for the continued use of the premises as a restaurant serving alcohol, bearing in  mind that it replaces Dino’s restaurant, which also had a licence for ‘on sale’ alcohol until very recently when it was unfortunately surrendered.  It was the committee’s view that a high-quality new restaurant such as number 76 would be an enhancement to that section of Commercial Street, complimenting other high-end restaurants further up the street and improving the environment in what is now a relatively dead, only sparsely residential area.  We would, however, ask for some modification of the opening hours to bring them into line with other restaurants operating in Commercial Street.

And we would oppose the granting of an off-licence in the light of existing problems with alcohol and street-drinking in Spitalfields.

Please note that Philip Vracas, who would be a licensee of number 76 and who is the Treasurer of the Society, was not present at last night’s meeting and had no part in the discussion or vote.

Yours sincerely,

Sandy Critchley

Collections will take place in January, between Monday 2 and Friday 20.

Please put out real Christmas trees only and make sure they are free of pots, soil and decorations as these do not compost down.
