From Jeremy: You may have never been to the last remaining Jewish place of worship in Spitalfields. You may have walked past – and not known what wonders wait inside. You may not know we even exist. I wish to extend this invitation and share with you an incredible piece of your local history.  Over the last 18 months Sandys Row Synagogue has undergone transformation.  We have successsfully completed nearly £500,000 of restoration work (thanks to English Heritage) and have totally replaced our 260 year old Huguenot roof and windows.  On March 20th I am leaving Spitalfields to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise the promise of my community and the much needed funds to improve the facilities for our very elderly and disabled members and support community and cultural programmes. http://jeremyfreedman.com/2011/12/kilimanjaro/

An Evening of Strings – February 20th

I am very pleased to invite you to an upcoming concert raising funds for the Piano Fund at Christ Church:

An Evening of Strings
Monday 20 February 2012
7.30-9.30pm

Welcoming the Evropska Quartet who will perform a wonderful programme of music for string quartet:

Haydn Op. 76 No. 2 ‘Fifths’
Janacek String Quartet No. 1 ‘Kreutzer Sonata’
Schumann String Quartet No. 1 in A Minor

“…intoxicating vigour, seamless ensemble and perceptive phrasing . . . This is a quartet to watch.” Seen and Heard International, 2011

Recently returning from a year in Prague, this young British quartet will be performing Janacek’s intensely passionate and evocative first string quartet. This popular quartet sits proudly among the wonderfully rich musical tradition of the Czech Republic, and The Evropska Quartet were fortunate enough to study the work with the Skampa Quartet whilst in Prague, who themselves have a great lineage extending back to the composer himself.

The evenings concert also includes Schumann’s first string quartet in A minor, one of only three works he wrote for string quartet, composed in just one month during a period of manic creativity in 1842, and Haydn’s ever popular and much loved ‘Fifths’ quartet.

Tickets £7 (£5 Conc.) – tickets available on the door.

I do hope to see you there!

Small dark blue-grey cat found and released

Yesterday, Sunday, a small young cat, dark blue-grey in colour, with no collar, fell into the light well of 19 Princelet Street and was unable to climb out.  When the basement window was opened it evaded capture and escaped into the building.  It was caught overnight in a baited trap provided by the RSPCA and released unharmed on to the street this morning in accordance with RSPCA advice.

Does anyone know who owns it?
